THE CURE VS LADY GAGA

Howdy!

It has definitely been a challenging and intense last couple of months. I have set out on the journey to write my debut EP and have been packing in many sleepless nights of recording, in-between full time work and pretending to have a social life.

Oh! SIDE NOTTE! Last weekend, whilst pretending to have a social life, I got to meet the VERONICAs!!! This was at the ‘Queen’s Ball Awards’ in Brisbane – and they sat at my table!!

Anyway… (side tracked)… I thought that I would take some time off of writing new material to unleash this cover video. So here it is! It is a mashup between Lady Gaga’s Monster and The Cure’s ‘Lovesong’ (inspired by Adele’s version).

I’d say that this is my most eccentric and creative video clip to date.  I collaborated with Kasia Fryckowska who filmed and directed the video and my highschool friend, and bus buddy, Libby Hendrie who did my special FX makeup… i.e. turned me into a monster.

On the 25th of April, alongside my band we had the opportunity to work with, Grammy award winning, Mike Howlett, in the recording of my new song.

Working with Mike was an experience like no other and I felt that we really connected in the studio. I’ve also never had this many people assist me with the creation of my music before and the energy and vibe in the studio was amazing.

For this recording we had James Walker on lead guitar, Darren Lau on bass, Chris Richards on percussion, Amela Duhrehic on backing vocals and I played acoustic guitar and layed down the main vocal line.

It means more than anything in the world to take a song that I wrote one step further and to have such an amazing team to work with.

As I continue to work hard to create new music. I’m putting my entire heart and soul into this project and I can’t wait to share the new material with you.

The last two weeks have been an adventure to say the least.

On the 30^th of March I had the honour of opening for Michelle Xen, for the launch of her RMX EP, Synesthesia, at the X & Y bar in Brisbane. Alongside my band we worked hard to put on our most refined performance to date.

For this show, we experimented with a prototype structure that I’m going to refer to as the ‘Next Generation of Carmichael.’

On the night we also unleashed a new track called ‘Alien.’ This track was written two years ago but, it has been kept a secret until now. I’m not sure if it will ever be released officially…but we will see. The song is about love being blind and beautiful and dark, with the narrative exploring concepts and themes around extra-terrestrial love.

The prototype that you can see in the photo above was designed by Interior design student, Céline Caron; and it was created to fit the theme of this song. As a team, Céline and I built this structure within a two week period; it was a challenge to say the least.

I’m very proud of my band and of Celine for their time and dedication to my artistic vision. It was a lot of hard work but it was worth it!

The next generation of Carmichael is on its way…

On Thursday 28th February, my videos showcased in an art exhibition called “The Shape Of Things to come: 7UP!” I have never been so proud, nervous, excited and emotional in my entire life. It was definitely a mixture of emotions as I watched people peruse through the exhibition and enter what was known as “The Room of Carmichael.”

The room featured a selection of my film clips being projected onto two screens. The room was dark, smoky; and in the corner was a spotlight and hanging from the ceiling was my studded “Falling For You” jacket (which rotated slowly). My “Falling For You” mask was placed underneath the hanging jacket, on top of a stack old TV’s which simultaneously flickered and projected static noise.

I remember standing there outside of ‘my room,’ and I felt really emotional. I watched people enter the space, some took photos with their phones, others stood and listened and watched my film clips, it was a very surreal moment for me. They were entering into my world, I world that I created one video at a time. All of my hard work and dedication was paying off and I felt a mixture of a million emotions.

I never wanted to be like all the other ‘cover artist’s on Youtube, another mannequin. I wanted my film clips to be art, and reflect me and my reality, what was inside of my head. What I have created is so personal to me and it shows my progression of myself stepping into the shoes of an artist.

To see so many people perusing around and in my room, watching my videos and engaging with the world that I created, was as much intimidating as it was liberating.

I am really proud to have had my work exhibited and I can’t wait for the next chapter of my CARMICHAEL project to unravel. Wish me luck this year as I have a lot of dreams and ambitions that I’m going to push for. The journey has only begun!

I have a lot to be thankful for and I’m grateful to everyone that has believed in me, who has collaborated with me and has helped me so far.

I have dedicated this song to a good friend and subscriber, Camille, who is from France. I hope you feel better soon as I know sometimes being a teenager can be tough and challenging. All the best!

A lot of people overlook the problems that teenagers go through, and that’s really sad. Everything we go through as a child and as a teenager, all our experiences, define and steer who we become as adults, so it’s important to bond and talk about our problems together, rather than bottling up all that negative energy.

I’m a huge fan of the 80s, so I couldn’t resist giving my cover of ‘Sweet Nothing’ by Calvin Harris and Florence Welch (from Florence and The Machine), a nostalgic reinterpretation by sampling the 80s hit ‘In The Air Tonight’ by Phil Collins. This is one of my favourite songs; I used to sing this all the time as a teenager.

Abraham Tilbury is the guitarist/multi-instrumentalist in my band project, CARMICHAEL, who is featured in the video. I’m proud to announce that he is launching his own independent music project, AllThingsLost (ATL). He is only 18, but he is nothing short of amazing and I want to support his development and progression as an artist. I believe in him.

In many ways, I feel like the luckiest person on earth. One of the things I am most grateful for, is that in my life I have had the opportunity to dream up the craziest of ideas and to turn them into a reality. I’m so thankful to everyone who believes in my music and my vision.

In the last week, I have had a number of gigs. Last friday night, the 23rd of Nov, I became DJ CARMICHAEL and belted some seriously infectious 80s/70s/Disco beats at an interior design event.

On the 26th of November I played at rics bar with my band, which consists of Chris Richards on Drums and Abraham Tilbury on guitar! And last night the 27th we were invited to play at the final year QUT showcase event. Thank you to Professor Phil Graham and the legendary John Willsteed for making that happen!

I used to have a rule that I would only play a gig every month, but now I feel that I want to do as many gigs as possible. I want to work as hard as I can to perfect my live show.

It’s been over 6 months since the release of Falling For You. Earlier in the year I collaborated with Sydney based Producer Jono Fernandez and we produced our love child, “Someone To Love.” This is a side project Carmichael dance release. We also signed this to the record label c2r records!

 

Music is everything to me and I’ll contnue to create music for the rest of my life!

By no means am I a 1D fan, but when I heard the song “little things” a little spark inside me went something like this… … … .. “NAWWWWWWwwwwwWWWWwwwwwWWWWWwww….”

Also, when I found the song was written by Ed Shareen. I decided that I wanted to put my own spin on it!

This is the outcome! I put my harmony’s to the test. Put my laptop and keyboard aside and strip things back for my take on 1D’s new single
