In the studio: Getting my new single “Falling For You” Mastered

Click here to watch the behind the scenes video…

Falling for you is the title of my next single release. And today I’m getting it mastered with Dave Neil. I’ve worked with Dave with all of my previous releases which includes ‘My Heart’, ‘Girl’ and ‘Love Defeat;’ I really trust and admire Dave’s work.

For those that don’t know, mastering is the final stage of the audio production process. Basically Mastering makes the song radio worthy, and as loud as consumablely possible…

But with anything that life throws at you, complications arose during this session. And Dave made a few suggestion as to how to improve the mix of the track.

Ok. Back to the drawing board.

So after a few sleepless nights we rebook the mastering session.

Mastering session take 2

This time I was not only accompanied by Gavin, but also Emily who is directed the film clip for Falling For You, and my friend Darren, who study’s audio engineering. I feel a lot more comfortable being with friends during the mastering session as I can become a little nervous during this process.

But my nerves were unnecessary. Dave did an amazing job with the mastering and the track is now ready to be released!

I’ve never been so excited to release a new single and I can’t wait to share the song with you.

The film clip will be release within the next few weeks and I can’t wait for you to experience what we have created.

Thank you watching,

CARMICHAEL

PAINTING DAVID BOWIE | CARMICHAEL

VIDEO NARRATION

Anyone who knows me well knows that I love David Bowie! People who know me even better also know that I used to paint! Long before I began to pursue music, even back in primary school I had a love for painting. I can remember skipping school to attend art classes way back when I was in grade 6! And throughout high school you would commonly find me hiding in the art room on my lunch break painting my reality.

In the last few years (since I’ve left school) I have been 100% driven on music – that’s what I love doing most! And my study’s within architecture have kept my hands relatively at bay, dreaming up new creations within the built form…

But I think this year I want to reconnect with myself as a visual artist! I can feel the gapping hole that has been left from not painting!

So to start this year off I wanted to do a portrait of David Bowie – a man who has inspired me in my own life and in my artistic endeavours.

Acrylic paint was the medium of choice. I also used some impasto gel to create some texture and this funny bottle of crackle stuff…which sort of worked in some places…

:) All in all, it was a lot of fun! And I managed to complete this in under 24hrs!

I’m keen to do more paintings!! But I would love to have some suggestions as to what or who to paint next??! I think I want to do a series on celebrities!

Peace!

Pumped Up Kicks (cover) by Foster Of The People!

Pumped Up Kicks is a song that has become embedded in my head! It’s been played to death on the radio, I’ve danced to it constantly at night clubs and it seems to always played at functions and party’s that I attend! It only seemed logical that I would do a cover of it!

CLICK HERE IF YOU CANT SEE IT

The song to me expresses some pretty dark subject manor and I wanted to convey that conceptually in my video! I hope I did it justice!

Anyway, I hope you like it and I would love to know your thoughts!?

Also if your on twitter it would mean a lot if you shared this by clicking this link:

or for facebook people… by posting the link to this video on your wall!

Thank you!

Regards,

NEW SINGLE announcement!!!!!

Weekly update!!!

Under the covers of my life I’ve been keeping a secret! And I’m about to unleash it!

Last weekend I began the filming for my new single which is called “Falling For You”!!! This is the first time that I’ve officially announced this online!!

Falling for You was filmed over a two day period, where (with limited sleep) we shot in a variety of locations around Brisbane city…

I had an amazing team of people working on the film clip with me and I’m very thankful to the multitude of people which have lended there time and talent!

Emily-May Mackay is the director for this clip and over the past 3 months we have been planning out this clip and perfecting the concept to the point that I am so so so proud of what we’ve created!!!

So filming is done! Next is onto editing…and in the very near future I can’t wait to share ‘Falling For You’…with you!

Do schools kill creativity?

Sir Ken Robinson has inspired me with his TED talks about education. I wrote in an earlier blog post (which you can view here) that I felt that the problem with our education system is that it is embedded in conservative thinking, which prevents people from living imaginative and creative lives.

Sir Ken Robinson gave an excellent talk on the same topic but said this in a much more convincing way then I ever could, so I encourage you to watch the video below! It is well worth your time and is highly entertaining!

“All children are artists. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up.” Pablo Picasso

I feel that if we continue to suppress creativity in our education system, then we will not be able move forward. We won’t be able to come up with creative solutions to world problems or to act in sustainable ways. Creativity I feel is key to the success of our future.

But I want to know your thoughts? What do you feel we can do towards making an education evolution?

All thoughts are welcome.

O Holy Night Cover Stephen Carmichael

I’ve never really been a Christmas person. Don’t ask me why, I’m just not. It’s unfortunate as the idea of Christmas is amazing. You have a time where everyone can celebrate together, spread love and exchange gifts and its an amazing festive time… But for me I’ve never really felt the Christmas ‘spirit.’

click here to watch my cover

I usually feel that my experiences of Christmas involve a series of stressful shopping trips and pressure over what to buy my friends and family. I see people running around like mad and it all seems like chaos. Maybe I’m just being pessimistic, but my biggest fear is that Christmas comes and goes so quickly each year and I never have enough time to experience it properly.

What I feel is…I feel that our consumerist society overshadows the true meaning of Christmas.

So for my cover song I chose to do a rendition of O Holy Night which I feel captures the true message of Christmas. My cover was done in one take, there is no auto tune or any fancy effects added to it (except for some reverb)…its just me and my guitar!

I hope you enjoy my cover… and if you like you can download this cover version by entering your email into the widget below…

If you’d like to leave a comment below I’d like to know what you thought of my cover? Should I do more acoustic covers like this? And I also what to know what Christmas means to you!?

Have an amazing Christmas!
